Which Region Is Fastest from Inside China

On the same account and method, Japan and the United States can differ several-fold in speed — not because of the servers but because of your carrier’s international exit to that region. So choose a region by carrier first, then by time of day, and only then by protocol. This guide gives a starting table by carrier, how to read the load lights, what to do at evening peak, and a five-minute test; note the two steadiest regions as default and backup.

Try these first, by carrier

  • Northern China Unicom: Japan and Korea first. Unicom’s exits to Japan and Korea are usually the most direct.
  • Southern China Telecom: Southeast Asia (Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia) or Australia first. Telecom’s southern exits are good.
  • China Mobile, Great Wall and other broadband: the China entry first. The client connects only to a domestic address and we handle the cross-border leg, so cross-border interference does not reach you — often the steadiest on mediocre broadband.
  • Mobile data: every carrier differs; test separately from home broadband. The best region on Wi‑Fi and on mobile data is often not the same.

Reading the load lights

Every flag on the region list carries a small light, and the private-network client shows the same light beside each region: it is set automatically from the average live bandwidth per server in that region — green idle, yellow in use, red busy. Among several Japan servers, take the green one.

Red does not mean broken, only busy at that moment; if it is slow and you want no fuss, switching to a green region is the least effort. Each region has several machines and the system picks the least busy at connection time — you never pick machines yourself.

Time of day

8–11 pm is the national peak and international exits are congested everywhere; fast by day and slow at night is congestion, not a fault. In that window, changing region helps more than reconnecting; for video, drop to 720p first.

Matching the protocol

  • Lossy networks (old-building broadband, mobile data): sing-box’s hysteria2 resists packet loss and is usually fastest.
  • Campus or office networks that throttle UDP: hysteria2, Tailscale and OpenVPN all run on UDP and get throttled — switch to Cisco over TLS.
  • Broadband that keeps flapping: the web proxy works request by request with no long connection, so it never drops.
  • One account works with all three protocols; if one fails, switch.

Five-minute test

  1. Measure local speed once without the route as the ceiling; if that is slow, no region will help.
  2. Pick two regions from the table, connect to each, and open the same speed-test site (choose an overseas test node — a domestic node cannot measure the cross-border link).
  3. Test the same two regions again at 9 pm Beijing time.
  4. Make the one that held up both times your default and the other your backup; retest only when things get noticeably slower.

FAQ

Why isn’t the nearest region the fastest?

The three Chinese carriers’ exits abroad differ greatly in quality, and a geographically close region may not use a good exit. Hence recommendations by carrier, not by map.

I chose China and an IP lookup shows Japan — is that normal?

Yes. The China entry splits traffic: Chinese sites leave from China, overseas sites land through an overseas line, and the IP-lookup site is overseas, so it sees that end.

Two connections to the same region gave different IPs?

Normal. A region has several machines and the least busy one is chosen at connection time; an established connection is never moved.

Can I pin one specific machine?

No, and there is no need — machines in a region are equivalent, and blocked addresses rotate automatically without changing the address in your client.
